June 4: Monet’s Gardens, Medieval Wonders & A Night of French Hospitality

Monet’s Gardens, Medieval Wonders & A Night of French Hospitality

Today was a true highlight of our Seine River journey—filled with art, history, and a taste of Normandy’s charm.

Morning: Claude Monet’s Magnificent Giverny

After breakfast, we set out for a guided tour of Claude Monet’s home and gardens in Giverny. Walking through the vibrant flower beds and iconic water lily ponds, it was easy to see how this peaceful haven inspired so many of Monet’s masterpieces. The house itself, with its cheerful colors and period furnishings, offered a glimpse into the daily life of the master impressionist. For art lovers and gardeners alike, Giverny was a dream come true.

Midday: Crepe Lunch & World at War Lecture

Back onboard, we were treated to a delicious crepe lunch prepared by Chef Julien—a true Normandy specialty! Sweet and savory, the crepes were a hit with everyone. As we enjoyed our meal, the ship continued its journey along the Seine.

After lunch, we gathered in the lounge for a fascinating history lecture by Nigel Stewart titled “The World at War.” His engaging presentation provided valuable context for the sites we’ll visit throughout Normandy, bringing the region’s WWII history to life.

Afternoon: Les Andelys & St. Saveur Church

In the afternoon, we arrived in the picturesque town of Les Andelys. Our guided walking tour took us up the slope to the dramatic setting along the Seine, with the ruins of Château Gaillard overlooking the town, made for stunning photos and a memorable visit. After the walk back down the hill, we walked through charming streets to the medieval St. Saveur Church, where centuries-old architecture and stained glass told stories of the town’s past.

Evening: Happy Hour, Dinner & Local Entertainment

Back on the Avalon Tapestry II, we gathered for Happy Hour in the lounge before enjoying another excellent dinner onboard. The evening concluded with a special treat—two local entertainers joined us for a night of music and singing. Their lively performance had everyone tapping their feet, singing along, and truly embracing the spirit of Normandy.

Tomorrow, we continue our journey deeper into Normandy, with more history and beauty awaiting us along the Seine!
